Billy Talent – An Analysis

For me personally, Billy Talent is the band with the least lasting impression.
Why is that?

  1. I found —and still find— the music very unison. I can start listening to one song from an album and seamlessly mix another one in without even noticing. What’s missing for me is variety and a fuller use of the band’s instrumental possibilities. I’m sure the guys are capable of more, if they ever feel like pushing themselves. That’s not to say they make bad music. It just doesn’t suit my idea of long-term listening.
Additionally, the band’s stamina didn’t seem particularly impressive. After just 70 minutes, the concert came to an abrupt end following a single encore. We did feel a bit taken aback when the majority of the audience silently streamed toward the exits, accepting the ending without protest.
The setlist played can be found here.
  2. There were large beers available at all times, because most concertgoers seemed satisfied with homeopathic doses. Stefan and I came up with two possible explanations for this:
Either they had no money, or they were indulging in other, more mind-altering substances. We couldn’t prove the former. We could smell the latter.
  3. The two of us were clearly at the upper end of the average age range. At least two thirds of the male attendees had either not yet experienced their first shave or could still remember it in great detail. Anyone older than us was clearly accompanying one of the above. We gave no thought whatsoever to the female audience.

Conclusion:
A pity. A real pity.
